Topic: The palaeontology of new dinosaur discoveries; an example from the new horned dinosaur Regaliceratops peterhewsi, AKA ‘Hellboy’.
In the spring of 2015, an iconic new species of horned dinosaur, Regaliceratops peterhewsi, was announced by the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Drumheller, Alberta. This new species is represented by an impressive skull, nicknamed ‘Hellboy’ with a distinct nose horn, eyes horns, and the shield-like frill at the back of the skull. This talk will lead the audience through the scientific journey of discovery associated with a new species of dinosaur. Starting from the initial fossil find, we will see the specimen travel through the stages of excavation and preparation, the different aspects of scientific research and publication, and ultimately a new exhibit communicating this discovery to the public, and its incorporation into popular culture.
