b2 – Patio Opener!
Saturday, June 1, 2019Jazz music and our opening party for the patio!
b2 – The flat two is a collaboration project between trombonist Brady Masik and guitarist Lee Billwiller. This dynamic duo has come together to work a modern twist into classic jazz standards, as well as work a jazz twist into modern popular music. Expect a musical journey through the ages, sure to keep you on your toes.
Brady Masik – Brady is widely considered to be Grande Prairie’s most versatile trombonist. Equally comfortable leading a jazz band section, playing in an orchestra, or sitting in a pit for a musical. Brady grew up in St. Albert where he started playing the trombone. He spent years in Edmonton performing in various combos and jazz bands including the University of Alberta jazz ensemble. Brady has called Grande Prairie home since 2012, and an active member of the GP music community. He has performed with many local groups including the GPRC Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Grande Prairie Symphony Orchestra, Grande Prairie Boys Choir, Cirque Musica, and performed in the pit orchestra for several Grande Prairie Live Theatre productions.
Lee Billwiller – Lee has been playing music since he was knee high to a grasshopper starting on bluegrass banjo at 8 years old and moving to guitar at 10. From there his performing career commenced, as his love of music and sound pushed him into the professional audio world. Honing his skills in live sound, studio engineering and as a session recording guitarist, the West Coast music scene was his stomping ground for more than 20 years. After jazz college at Malaspina in Nanaimo, Lee continued to perform, record and produce music of all genres all over Western Canada until he met his then to be wife. They decided Alberta was calling and started a new adventure together eventually landing in the great white north. Although relatively new to Grande Prairie, Lee’s musical passions have continued to flourish in the local scene dabbling in jazz on bass guitar as well as various other combos and groups.

Matt Patershuk’s unaffected singing belongs to a different time and his voice reflects a reserve and unspoken toughness that is rarely heard today. Patershuk’s baritone may not be the most delicate voice you’ll ever hear, but it suits his songs so well that you couldn’t imagine him sounding any different. You can hear the resolve it takes for Matt to honestly share his songs; no matter how delicate the matters they express, he never skirts true emotions or takes the easy way out by giving way to melodrama. The songs on ‘I Was So Fond of You’ are peppered with the kind of humanity that you can hear in Willie Nelson’s best work and sometimes reflect a subdued irony that wouldn’t be out of place in a John Prine tune.
