One of our most exciting tours this season!

Discover the secrets of the dinosaur-bearing Wapiti Formation through this memorable river float excursion. We will transport you back into an ancient world, while you also experience the peace and beauty of the modern river. Learn from paleontologists, touch newly exposed fossils, and explore sites only accessible from the water.

The tour starts at the The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum where guests receive their safety gear and adventure bags and are shuttled to Pipestone Creek Park. The float tour takes you on a unique 4 hour experience down the Wapiti River (the ride is gentle – there are no rapids). This unique experience focuses on geology, paleoecology, and natural history of the Peace Region. We’ll show you what to look for and what to do when you find a potential fossil.

Our highly trained rafters, certified by Rescue Canada, will inform you about the safety procedures and the itinerary of the float tour before embarking on this exciting trip. There are two stops along the way; one for a lunch break, with delicious food prepared by Café on 43, and another one at Spring Creek, a site rich in fossilized plant material. There, our paleontology guide will teach you about a world that once flourished here, with animal species thriving in a long-gone warm-temperate environment. This includes dinosaurs, but also ancient crocodiles, mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.

The tour wraps up with our ‘dino bus’ bringing you back to your vehicles at The Museum, where you can enjoy a meal or drink on our patio, shop the gift shop or tour the lab and/or museum. Guaranteed to be an epic river adventure!

Our 2024 rafting seasons starts June 19th and runs until August 29th, Wednesday–Sunday.

Wed–Fri: 8 am start at museum
Sat–Sun: 9 am start at museum
Group Bookings: flexible start time

PROGRAM DETAILS

Float down the scenic Wapiti River and learn about the geology, palaeontology, and natural history of the area. Includes free admission to the museum on the day of the booking. Kids 7 and up can attend with a parent/guardian, at the parent’s or guardians’ discretion.  The entire trip is between 5–6 hours with 4-5 hours spent on the Wapiti River, with stops at fossil sites.  

The 4.5 hour program includes:

• Pre-program with our team at Pipestone Creek campground
• 3.5-4 hour float down the Wapiti River
• Riverside picnic style lunch provided
• Fossil exploration at our Spring Creek fossil site
• Return trip from the exit point back to Pipestone Creek

Price list:

• $168.00 per adult
• $147.00 per youth (8+)
• $945 – Group Bookings (entire raft- 8 adults, 10 with children) ideal for team building, special events and corporate retreats

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR

• Comfortable shoes that can get wet
• Clothing appropriate to the weather conditions (dress in layers it is cool in the morning)
• At least 1L of water per person
• Sunscreen
• swimsuit under clothing
• Bug spray
• Hat
• Camera

PLEASE NOTE

• Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult
• Safety waivers must be signed by all participants
• Guests *meet at the Museum for their tours
• There are washrooms at the Pipestone Creek campground. However, there are no facilities available once the float has begun; please plan accordingly
• Tours are weather-dependent, and may be rescheduled in the event of adverse weather conditions

CANCELLATION POLICY

• If you are unable to make your booking for any reason, you need to change or cancel your program booking. Please contact us at 587-771-0662 at your earliest convenience.
  • Changes made up to one week prior to the program’s start date are eligible for a 90% refund.
  • Changes made between one week and three days (72 hours) are eligible for a 50% refund.
  • Changes made less than 3 days (72 hours) prior to the program start date are not eligible for a refund.
• In addition to this, if the cancellation is due to circumstances beyond your control (travel delays or extreme weather ie. smoke), the first option is to explore re-booking.  If re-booking is not an option, 100% will be refunded.
